Privacy Fence vs. Privacy Screen

The key difference: where it can stand

A privacy fence runs along a property line. Its position is fixed by the boundary, and it usually has to be long because it encloses the whole side of the lot. A privacy screen is a freestanding panel or series of panels. It can be placed next to a patio, hot tub or seating area, angled and sized for one specific view.

Because the height needed to block a view depends so strongly on position, that freedom decides which one works.

Case 1: neighbor at your ground level

A neighbor standing in their yard (eyes 1.7 m) 3 m from the boundary; your seating 6–10 m from them, 5 m wide. Hiding seated people with a 10 cm margin:

Both options are modest. The fence has an extra advantage: once its top is above the viewer’s eyes, it hides the entire yard behind it, not only one zone. Against ground-level views, a boundary fence is usually the natural choice.

Case 2: neighbor in a second-floor window

A window with eyes at 4.6 m, the boundary 4 m from it, and your 5 m wide patio 9–13 m away:

Here the fence would need to be 1.23 m taller than the screen. A fence that tall is rarely practical or permitted, and a normal-height fence hides only a strip next to it (see the fence sightline calculator). The screen is the geometric winner, though it must be wider.

Using both

A common, efficient combination: a standard-height boundary fence that handles ground-level views and defines the yard, plus a screen, pergola or planting close to the most private zone for elevated views. Frequently asked questions

Is a privacy fence or a privacy screen better?

Neither is better in general. A fence along the boundary works well against viewers at your own ground level and defines the property. A freestanding screen can be placed where the geometry is favorable, which matters against elevated views. Many yards use both.

Is a screen cheaper than a fence?

Costs vary too much by material, region and installation to state here. Geometrically, compare the face area each option needs to block the same view — height × run. Against upper-floor views a screen near the seating often needs far less area than a boundary fence.

Can I put a screen on top of my fence?

Extensions or toppers raise the effective height at the boundary. Model this in the planner by entering the combined height. Local rules often count the extension toward the permitted fence height, so check them first.
